Kingston Hotel Cafe Cookbook: Free-Spirited Recipes to Warm the Soul
Published in Paperback by Sasquatch Books (October, 1998)
Authors: Judith Weinstock and Kingston Hotel Cafe (Wash.)
Average review score:

No need to be a customer of the restaurant to love this.
This cookbook is a delight, mixing fresh, seasonal ingredients in surprising but always appetizing ways -- and best of all, using recipes that are not arcane or terribly time-consuming (but do expect to spend a fair amount of time chopping). My personal favorites are two unusual summer dishes, one a fruit gazpacho and the other a hot blueberry soup with coconut milk and lime. Yum! I *will* seek out the restaurant when next I'm in the Pacific Northwest.

You missed a review of it in Seattle Times-Sunday mag.
See abov

Full of creative and mouth-watering recepies!
The recipes in this book hold up to the high quality of food served in the restaurant. I have spent many mornings munching on fresh homemade scones, and my palate waters at the thought of the many varied deserts inside. Every recipe is a treasure in itself, and no kitchen can truly be complete without them.

Hawai'i One Summer
Published in Paperback by University of Hawaii Press (December, 1998)
Author: Maxine Hong Kingston
Average review score:

Soothing and nostalgic
Hawai'i One Summer is a slim collection of luminous essays reflecting diversal topics ranging from surfing to house chores. Indeed, this is the least read book by Hong-Kingston. Her prose is clear and evocative. It is very different from the radical Woman Warrior. It evokes a zen quality, like sipping a soulful cup of ginseng tea.

Absolutely Wonderful
HAWAI'I ONE SUMMER is probably Kingston's least-read work, but I think it's the piece which captures this writer's clear and graceful prose style the best. Her essays range from surfing to dishwashing. Who'd ever guess that someone could write a substantial essay on a mundane activity like dishwashing? Well, Maxine Hong Kingston achieved this task. HAWAI'I ONE SUMMER would probably be good to use in an expository writing course.

Kingston knows local lit scene in Hawai'i, and cosmos too.
A memoir of Maxine Hong Kingston's memorable years in Hawai'i, when she went from Viet Nam protests and virtual street existence to pedagogies and mythologies of empowerment that took on national and global impact. This, I find, an insightful, wry, even caustic book on the local literature movements in Hawai'i, always fresh and insightful even when New Yorkerish.

Kingston Trio on Record
Published in Paperback by Kingston Korner (July, 1986)
Authors: Benjamin Blake, Jack Rubeck, and Allan Shaw
Average review score:

THE BIBLE OF THE KINGSTON TRIO
Superb, fun, and, most important, thorough history and discography of the great Trio. Lots of pictures and fascinating interviews (with the late Dave Guard, and Nick Reynolds, among others). Every song the Trio ever recorded is annotated, every release date of every single, album, and other material, including 7 Up commercials, is provided. Those of us still around who grew up with them and appreciated them know how great they were, and this book is a delightful revisiting of these extremely talented, and witty young men and their unique time - that tranquil window between the Eisenhower 50's and the Beatle-ized 60's. This book answers a lot of lingering questions. Happily, the guys who put together this book are also responsible for making available, thru their mail order outfit, every Kingston Trio recording that has been re-released on CD.

The single greatest tribute to THE TRIO(s)ever assembled
Having fallen in love with them when I was 7, and still considering them the greatest pop group of all time (sorry Beatles fans), this book is a must for anyone who wants to get to know them. Congrats to all concerned. There will never be anything like them ever again, and this book captures our little moment together better than anything except, of course, listening to the records. Thanks for the memories!!!

OH THE MEMORIES
I'M PROUD TO COUNT MYSELF AS A BIG BIG FAN OF NICK,BOB,DAVE AND later JOHN. I STILL PLAY THE 33RPM OF THEIR CONCERT AT UCLA and thrill to KEN Kangara, with Nick on the congo drum and Roddy McCorley, they bring back memories of a time of infinite promise known to us insiders as the 60's Ya hadda be there

Beyond Trout: A Flyfishing Guide
Published in Hardcover by Johnson Books (December, 1995)
Authors: Barry Reynolds, John Berryman, Kingston, and John Gierach
Average review score:

The title says it all.
This book is a very good discertation on fly fishing for species other than trout. It covers warm water species, bass bluegill/sunfish, perch and crappie as well as other cool water species, like walleye and pike, and even includes catfish. The author covers each species in a seperate chapter. Covering items such as prefered habitat, spawning, water temperature, fishing methods, and fly recommendations. If you like to fly fish, but trout aren't readily available in your area, this book could give you some insight into fish you might not have considered as fly rod fish.

A great book
This book is a great place to start, or if you already have that is okay, in warmwater fly-fishing. The information is very helpful. A must for the angler who can't go to the trout stream every weekend and a local lake is much closer.

Children of Sisyphus (Longman Caribbean Writers Series)
Published in Paperback by Addison-Wesley Pub Co (December, 1987)
Author: Orlando Patterson
Average review score:

Concrete Dungle
Orlando Patterson's Children of Sisyphus set the standard for social realism in Caribbean fiction. He does not romanticize the lives of the poor, nor does he damn them with neglect;rather, he gives their lives dignity.
This is the moral tightrope that all Third World writers face: the choice between compassion and brutal honesty. Patterson succeeds in this fine portrayal of the lives of the poor that is imbued with grace, despite their mean existence.

A finely written classic of Caribbean literature.
In the years following the first publication of Orlando Patterson's novel it has become a classic, to the extent that it is now required reading in Jamaican secondary schools. Set in the shantytown slums of Kingston in the late nineteen fifties, Patterson's charcterizations of the people at the very bottom of Jamiacan society have great power -- as reggae star Dennis Brown once sang, their story is "the half that's never been told". Following a group of Jamaica's poorest, most humble "sufferers" in their search for deliverance, the author brings to life a Jamaica that is a universe away from most American images of the Caribbean as a beautiful beach with a happy reggae soundtrack. As someone who has visited Jamaica many times, I loved this this book and highly recommend it to anyone who would enjoy an unusual novel from a different cultural perspective, and/or those who may be interested in Jamaican/Caribbean culture and the roots of the rastafarian/black identity movement.

Descendants of John Milliman
I bought the book on John Milliman and the companion book on Aaron Milliman a few years ago. I refer to them constantly and have provided information to other family members doing Milliman family research. A great compilation of names and information and WELL indexed. If you have a Milliman in your family tree this is the book for you!

Great resource for Milliman research. A must!
Ms. Austin did a supberb job in researching and compiling information on the decendants of the first known Milliman in America. If you are researching the Milliman family line you will be absolutely thrilled to obtain this book. She even included pictures when available. What a treasure!!!! Thank you Ms. Austin!

The Exciting Adventures of Hydra & Muste Otter: Life in the Big Sea
Published in Paperback by G Sharp Productions (30 November, 2001)
Authors: George J. Kingston, Sydney Ann Fischer, Andy Sallmon, and George Kingston
Average review score:

Motivates kids to grab a pencil
The Exciting Adventures Of Hydra & Muste Otter: Life In The Big Sea by George J. Kingston is a wondrous, full-color activities enhanced storybook for young readers, about two otter friends and their day-to-day life. Filled with gorgeous photography and educational information about sea creatures, the food chain, and how mammals can survive in the cold and sometimes harsh waters, The Exciting Adventures Of Hydra & Muste Otter is as informationally enriching as it is fascinatingly entertaining. A highly recommended, consumable "Activity Section", provides puzzles for kids, and motivates them to grab a pencil. Rounding out this truly exceptional book, is a simple glossary to help expand the vocabularies of inquisitive young minds.

A beautiful and great educational tool!
If you want your child to have fun learning about sea animals then this is a must read. The book has beautiful photographs and fun drawings. The name of each character has roots in animal classification (which I thought was a very clever learning tool) and the story conveys important facts about the animal life contained within.

The story was fun and educational. These animal adventurers are sure to be off on another adventure soon based on the ending. The only weakenss I found was that the book was a bit anthropomorphic for me but kids will love it. As an animal professional, the specific parts I had trouble with were the humans (biologists) feeding the otters in the wild (not a good idea) and the part where the otters ride the orca on his back (transient orcas eat mammals).

The big plus of this book, beyond the breath taking photos, is that the author included clever learning aids in the activity section. If you are an educator or homeschooler you will love it! Inside is a hidden word challenge, a word scramble, a crossword puzzle, questions, a memory game, a sleuth activity, a glossary and classification section and more. Don't worry, an answer key is included!

For a Future to Be Possible: Commentaries on the Five Mindfulness Trainings
Published in Paperback by Parallax Pr (February, 1998)
Authors: Thich Nhat Hanh, Robert Aitken, Richard Baker, Stephen Batchelor, Patricia Marx Ellsberg, Joan Halifax, Chan Khong, Maxine Hong Kingston, Jack Kornfield, and Annabel Laity
Average review score:

Excellent guide to implement precepts into daily life
Thich Nhat Hanh has updated the traditional Buddhist precepts in this book. His version goes beyond "do not kill," for example, to be mindful of that we might be killing inadvertently. He makes us aware of the broadness of the precepts and thus encourages us to be more mindful. If we are not mindful, we break the precepts. Therefore, he calls them Mindfulness Trainings. Thay's approach frames the precepts in a way that is helpful in our daily life. He makes them relevant.

Time Out of Mindfulness
In a world of deceit, excess, killing, lying and stealing, the present moment works with faith FOR A FUTURE TO BE POSSIBLE by enlightenment from the Buddha, the practice of love and understanding, and ever bigger and greater numbers of communities seeking wisdom, harmony and awareness. Art and meditation send energy into cell nutrition and nervous system health. Mindfulness teaches respect for all life, generosity, responsibility, careful speech and healthy diet for concentration and insight. Nobel Prize winner Thich Nhat Hanh's book is a beautifully reader-friendly steppingstone to THE GOOD HEART by the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, AWAKENING THE BUDDHIST HEART by Lama Surya Das, and LOVINGKINDNESS by Sharon Salzberg.

The Clairmont Correspondence: Letters of Claire Clairmont, Charles Clairmont, and Fanny Imlay Godwin
Published in Hardcover by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (April, 1995)
Authors: Marion Kingston Stocking, Claire Clairmont, and Clara Mary Jane Clairmont
Average review score:

Good for now
Though nearly perfect, the book leaves you with this yawning blackness of not ever truly learning of what you hoped to know about Claire Clairmont. The author is wise (and she gave the greater portion of her life to this and you can tell)...in that she allows the reader to read and come to her own conclusions. In fact, next to having Claire Clairmont's letters published as they exist (and why not?)...this is the closest most of us will ever get. And, honestly, why haven't her letters been published AS WRITTEN...Worked great with Kurt Cobain's journal. Why isn't that kind of thing happening more often?
